LACTULAC is indicated in the treatment of chronic intestinal constipation, since thanks to its mechanism of action an increase in colonic peristalsis and softening (rehydration) of feces is achieved. Hepatic or portosystemic encephalopathy.
Dosage and route of administration: The dose in children is: Children under 1 year: 5 ml. From 1 to 5 years: 10 ml. From 6 to 12 years: 20 ml a day. The usual dose in adults: is 15 ml to 30 ml or 10 to 20 g of lactulose orally daily. The dose can be increased to 60 ml per day if necessary. It takes 24 to 48 hours to produce the desired effect. Some patients have found that the administration of LACTULAC together with juice, water or milk is better accepted. Prevention and treatment of hepatic or portosystemic encephalopathy: Adults: 90 to 180 ml (initially can be administered 30 to 45 ml every 1 or 2 hours until producing the desired effect, then adjust to recommended doses). Children and adolescents: 40 to 90 ml. Infants: 2.5 to 10 ml divided into 3 or 4 times a day.
Since LACTULAC contains galactose (less than 2.2 g per 15 ml) its use is contraindicated in patients who require a low galactose diet, hypersensitivity. Acute abdomen syndrome and intestinal occlusion.
